Architectural Materials for Newcastle & Lake Macquarie Custom Homes

Choosing the right materials for a custom home in the Hunter region requires a delicate balance of aesthetics, durability and environmental performance. Between the salty air of Newcastle’s coast and the more bushfire-prone hills of Lake Macquarie, your material palette needs to work hard.

At Jenkins Residential, we specialise in selecting materials that not only look architecturally inspired but are also fit for purpose in our unique climate.

Coastal durability in Newcastle

For projects near the coast, salt spray is a primary concern. Standard materials can corrode quickly, leading to high maintenance costs. We often recommend high-grade aluminium window frames, such as the Aura signature range, which offer superior resistance to corrosion while providing sleek, modern sightlines.
In terms of cladding, we look for products that don’t require constant painting. Innova Montage and other fibre-cement based claddings provide a contemporary, textured look that stands up to the elements without the warping associated with some timber products in coastal humidity.

Bushfire resilience in Lake Macquarie

Many of our favourite Lake Macquarie suburbs are nestled against beautiful bushland, which brings specific regulatory requirements. In our Belmont North project for example, we utilised Duragroove cladding, which is suitable for homes rated up to BAL 40. This allows us to achieve a sophisticated, vertical-joint aesthetic while ensuring the home meets stringent fire safety standards.

Interior sophistication and longevity

Inside the home, we believe in materials that feel as good as they look. Flooring is the most important decision you will make. While we often use various hardwoods for their timeless appeal and durability, we also consider engineered timbers and high-quality tiles for areas that transition directly to outdoor pools or decks.

The final touch: architectural shading

Materials aren’t just about what covers the walls; they are about how the home interacts with light. For example, we used Heka Hoods in our Belmont North project that provide a dual benefit – they offer a sharp, modern silhouette to the exterior, while also providing vital shading that protects your interior from UV and reduces solar heat gain.

By choosing a material palette that respects the local environment, Jenkins Residential creates homes that are as resilient as they are beautiful.
